Prevention

Preventing families from becoming homeless in the first place with Anchors to Stay Prevention Program and Casting Lifelines Referral programs.

With more than 40% of Americans a $400 expense away from financial distress, the threat of crisis looms closely for too many families. Preventing families from spiraling into homelessness is an essential part of the Family Promise mission.

PROACTIVE SOLUTIONS

We provide a variety of strategies to ensure the people we serve do not fall into the cycle of housing instability that can devastate families and alter the course of children’s lives.

Prevention is the lifeline to stabilize housing for those who are at risk of becoming homeless.

Our prevention program, Anchors to Stay, is newer to our Affiliate. They keep people in our community from becoming homeless, and therefore decrease the need for shelter.  Those options once homeless for our shore area tend to be motels and campgrounds. The cost per night ranges from $180-$500/ per night. That can be from $5,580-$15,500 a month, only for one family. That’s 75% more than the average cost of one family’s stay in a traditional emergency shelter. Our shelter costs operate at 1/3 of the cost of traditional shelters. Despite our lower shelter costs, prevention is still 87% less expensive than what it would cost for the same family’s stay in our shelter program.

Anchors to Stay Prevention Program

Eligible program participants must go through our screening process and demonstrate a financial need. The program provides short-term financial assistance to stabilize families facing a short-term financial crisis. All program participants are required to engage in programming services and financial literacy education. Our partnership with Help Us Move In (HUMI) helps support this effort in our community.

Casting Lifelines Referral Program

Every phone call coming into our Day Center, whether eligible for our programs or not, is screened and matched with services and resources available locally in the community. A volunteer or staff is available to help cast you in the right direction.
